World's Dumbest Problem

Wasting food is not a good idea! This fact is very well embossed in the sub-conscious mind of every human, but we all still end up doing it. Some rattle brains such as fussy kids eating in the college cafeteria, couples out on a date or maybe some friends enjoying a party, always end up with leftovers on their plate. According to them, justice is done to the unconsumed eatables by simply chucking them into the bin. Then there are people who say that they never waste food, but never live up to their claim. Ask yourself a question, “When was the last time I wasted food?”. Probably most of us wouldn’t even bother to look at what’s left in the dishes.

Long drives excite most of us, don’t they? During those lovely rides across cities, we are often welcomed by smelly streets, piles of garbage and polluting waste disposal sites.

That moment we  immediately roll up the windows to stop the ghastly odour from entering our nostrils and start fidgeting with our mobiles to avoid the horrific sight of waste. Our inner desperation recites only one spell at that moment, “Take me away ASAP!”

Have you ever stressed upon the reason behind the stink or the insects and scavengers feasting on the heaps of waste? So who is to be blamed for this utter negligence and is there a more conceivable way to deal with all of this?
Remember the slice of tomato you took out of your favourite McDonald’s Veggie burger or the chunks of capsicum you abandoned from the barbeque your dad setup. We all knowingly or unknowingly waste small bits of food and contribute to 1.3 Billion tonnes of uneaten nutriment. It’s a lot, isn’t it? The sad part of the story is that the world still has approximately 815 million hungry stomachs to feed. Valued at 1.2 trillion dollars, the same unwanted food is more than enough to feed twice the amount of people suffering from hunger.

We all simply sit back, relax, and say, “What can I do? I’m too busy!” Social service begins at home and it does not require long hours of commitment. All you’ve got to do is finish what’s on your plate and you can: -
·      Stop 9% of the global Green House Gas effects.
·      Not attract disease transmitting vectors.
·      Prevent drainage systems from blocking and ensuring healthy sanitation in communities and discharge of waste.
·      Make waste management more affordable and provide an effective system of waste disposal to the 2 billion people deprived of it.
·      Generate food security for millions
·      & Create Smiles

Astonishingly countries with higher per capita incomes generate more food waste than developing countries. Universally food waste production is directly proportional to the increase in income. That means that the majority of the food is wasted by the people who come under the highest tax paying bracket in any country.

According to the waste atlas, U.S.A tops the world in Solid waste production. The alarming fact is that an average American family, wastes upto 2000 dollars worth of food per year, which is much higher than the per capita incomes of many countries.
Recently a lock down is imposed in the U.S.A due to the outbreak of Covid-19. This gave a blow to the dairy industry as the demand for dairy products has become less than 50%. What do you think is done with all that produced milk. Well! if you've made it all the way here, i'll leave that here for you to find out.
Now imagine the amount of wastage in the times when there is a global shortage in food supplies. Should we do something about it? Ofcourse we have to. Mother Earth has been challenged of her limits for too long now. So wake up! There are small things we can keep in our minds to make world a healthier place. The three mantras to follow are Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

Post Lockdown Strategy: -It's understood that the world will witness a transition after the barriers and check points are removed and we once again become a free bird. Life will definitely take a different turn. In my opinion it is a wonderful idea to change the policies of life by which we govern. Especially our food related habits. According to a survey conducted on 284 people during lockdown, 85% did not waste any food which is awesome but 15% people still wasted food when there are many who sleep empty stomach. The reason behind that was overbuying, overcooking and inappropriate storage. So these are some of the habits which one should definitely change. Besides that sophisticated waste management systems are not enough to counter waste. All we need is a DESIRE TO CHANGE.
